The incredible Hulk

McCloskey I44R

May 2021

It’s massive, green, and crushes raw materials with immense power and strength. So, it’s no surprise that Bay of Plenty firm, Waiotahi, has dubbed it’s new McCloskey I44R Impact Crusher, ‘The Hulk’.

The monster machine is already living up to its superhero namesake in the two quarries where it has been put to work by Waiotahi, creating a significant ramp up in production with its incredible output, says director, Phillip Claydon.

“The crusher has had a huge impact on our business, especially at our Blue Rock quarry, where we don’t have the space to run up big stockpiles. This can make it a challenge to meet our summer order spike, however this season, the crusher’s ability to produce at such a fast rate allowed us to take orders, produce the material while the trucks were running, load it straight out , and send it out the gate. This high production piece of equipment is a step change for us.”

The McCloskey I44R combines the productivity of a 45” impactor with the versatility of a full screening and recirculating system, allowing operators like Waiotahi to produce a crushed and screened final product with one machine. The combination of the impactor with the High Energy Screenbox and a recirculating conveyor deliver maximum productivity and unmatched portability.

Although based mainly at Blue Rock, a hard rock quarry producing all grades of standard roading material, Waiotahi has also operated the McCloskey I44R at its metal pit at Reid’s Road, where it produces High PSV sealing chip and concrete aggregates.

The quarries are 15 minutes apart, and despite the 360-horsepower crusher’s hefty, almost 55 tonne weight, it is highly mobile, says Phillip. “We bought a new dolly for our transporter and can move it easily between sites. We have another hard rock quarry and a processing plant in the Opotiki area where it will also rotate in time.”.

Some of the McCloskey I44R’s features include an open chassis for ease-of-access, a 1200mm main conveyor width, large double deck pre-screen, and a swing out radial return conveyor, which has full length dust suppression control, allowing operators to recirculate oversize material from the screenbox back to the feed hopper or radial a complete 90 degrees while the machine is running.

Mike James, Waiotahi’s Whakatane Metal Supplies Manager, says alongside the crusher’s superior productivity, he has been most impressed with its scalping ability. “Some products we produce have quite a dirty raw feed. Normally we wouldn’t dream of putting this raw material into a crusher – we would scalp it first using a power screen then crush the oversize. The I44R scalps out just as good as the power screen and crushes the oversize all in one movement, making two different products at once out of the same material. The crusher has eliminated one machine and two processes, and also the need for loaders and diggers feeding the material and taking it away.”

With its clever design, each sectional component of the crusher is wider than the last, allowing unrestricted flow of material without funnelling or narrowing. The 6.8m3 hopper has hydraulic locking and side locking wedges which are easily accessible from the ground. Mike says the open chassis makes it easy to access other working parts, with plenty of room to change or flip blow bars and get into the rotor.

The crusher’s double deck post screen is another big plus, he says. “It allows us to make two products at the same time or separate two products without the need for another machine. Everywhere we look, this machine saves us money.”

Waiotahi has been a trusted name in civil engineering, quarrying and transport in the Bay of Plenty since 1957, and has been producing top quality aggregates and base course since 1972. Today the family-owned business has a team of 200, with Phillip Claydon, his four brothers, and Spike Petersen taking over from their fathers, Richard Claydon and Robbie Petersen in December 2019. “We have had a good relationship with CablePrice for many years, buying numerous machines off them, and getting great service from the Rotorua branch. The CablePrice team did an outstanding job when we were setting up the new McCloskey crusher. They came down to site to get us established and to ensure we were able to produce all the right materials,” says Philip.

In 2020, Waiotahi also purchased a Kawasaki 92Z7 wheel loader from CablePrice to complement the new crusher. “The wheel loader has a 4.6 cubic metre bucket, which enables us to maintain the crusher’s stockpiles, clear the belts, and load material onto the trucks in a few passes.”

The firm is also a big fan of Hitachi excavators, and purchased two additional new machines for their operation from CablePrice last year – a Hitachi ZX135US-5B, and ZX65USB-5A.

CablePrice Sales Specialist, Brendon Billet says in addition to rock crushing, the I44R’s power and versatility makes it ideal for other tough jobs including asphalt recycling, concrete recycling, construction, and demolition. He was delighted to be involved in the purchase process of Waiotahi’s latest machines – as when he first started as a young apprentice technician at CablePrice in 1997, one of his first jobs was working on Waiotahi’s equipment. “I value the relationship Waiotahi has with CablePrice and also my own long personal association. It’s great to have worked with two generations of directors at the company, who have such incredible knowledge of their industry.”
