The newly released Hitachi ZX530LCH-7 large excavator is already turning heads across New Zealand’s quarrying, mining, and heavy construction sectors. According to Andrew Crane, National Product Manager – Equipment at CablePrice, this 55-tonne powerhouse is built for operators who need reliability, strength, and performance on the most demanding terrain.
“This machine really comes into its own on steep, challenging sites,” says Andrew. “Thanks to its upgraded undercarriage, featuring components typically found on the next-size-up model, and a heavier counterweight, it delivers exceptional stability and climbing ability. The result is a substantial 411kN traction force, around 30% higher than the model below it.”
Move more material in a range of conditions.
"You’re in control with Hitachi ZX-7 "
This improved stability also allows for the use of larger attachments, such as buckets and hydraulic breakers, giving operators more versatility and boosting productivity, he adds.
“This machine can lift at least a tonne, and sometimes a tonne-and-a-half, more than other models in the same size class. That makes a real difference in productivity.”
Another key upgrade is the ZX530LCH-7’s enhanced durability. With larger upper and lower rollers and idlers than smaller models, it’s built to better withstand the wear and tear of heavy operation on site and long-distance travel.
“This translates into significantly reduced maintenance costs over the life of the machine,” Andrew says.
At the heart of the ZX530LCH-7 is an Isuzu 6WG1 15.681-litre engine, delivering a hefty 296kW of power, allowing it to tackle the tough jobs with ease.
“The ZX530LCH-7 is well suited for any sector where production is a key requirement, particularly mining, quarrying, large scale construction, civil engineering and demolition. Hitachi has been really focused on reducing fuel consumption but increasing overall power and workload.”
Despite the engine’s large increase in horsepower, with Hitachi’s new industry-leading hydraulic system, HIOS V, and its SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 11% compared to previous models.
“Hitachi has really stepped up with more power, better fuel economy, and smoother operation all in one package.”
One of the first Kiwis to get behind the controls of the new model is Danny Walker, who runs Nelson-based gold mining company Placer Mining. He took delivery of New Zealand’s second ZX530LCH-7 late last year and says it’s proving to be a smart investment.
“When we looked at the data, we were surprised at how fuel-efficient it was. It’s only using 20 litres of fuel an hour, which is really good for a machine this size,” he says.
Although the machine is currently doing relatively light work on the mine site, excavating gravel and feeding it into a 100-cubic-metre-per-hour floating screen plant, Danny says the real value is in its versatility and strength.
“It’s definitely capable of moving a lot more material in a range of conditions. For us, it’s working in water and digging into bedrock, which requires serious grunt. We’re really happy with its performance.”
Operator comfort and safety has long been a hallmark of Hitachi’s design ethos, and the ZX530LCH-7 continues that tradition.
“I’ve got one operator who loves it so much, I can barely get him out of it,” Danny laughs. “Everything is where it should be, visibility is great. It’s perfect.”
The machine includes LED work lights and Hitachi’s Aerial Angle® camera system, offering up to six views and a 270-degree field of vision to improve safety on busy sites. The cab also features a Level II Falling Object Protection (FOPS) guard and an heated air-suspension seat that moves in sync with the pilot levers. Reduced noise and vibration in the cab are also helping to reduce operator fatigue.
“We’re getting a lot of great feedback about these new comfort features,” Andrew says.
Danny Walker is a long-time fan of the Hitachi brand, which he says is in partly due to the service he has received from CablePrice, alongside the reliability and productivity of the machines.
“I’ve probably bought 100 Hitachi excavators from CablePrice over the years and they have been incredible to deal with. It’s another big reason why I haven’t looked at any other brand.”
Andrew Crane says the Hitachi ZX530LCH-7 is a welcome addition to CablePrice’s market offering.
“We are very excited about all the features Hitachi has introduced in this model, which are being well received by the various industries we sell into. The bottom line always comes back to our customers achieving as much productivity as they can in as little time as possible, with greater cost efficiencies. The Hitachi ZX530LCH-7 delivers on all counts.”
